Palo Alto, California, United States
Paula Hillard MD is Professor Emerita in the Ob/gyn Department, Stanford University where she practices Pediatric and
Adolescent Gynecology. She grew up
in the “Atomic City” of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, attended UNC, Stanford med School, and UNC-Chapel Hill residency. She joined
Stanford faculty in 2007 after 23 years at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. She has
over 40 years’ experience as a clinician caring for adult women, girls of all ages, adolescents,
young adults, and trans-masculine individuals. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
She’s done the usual academic things—publishing (2 textbooks as sole
Editor, book chapters, and original research) so as not to perish; teaching,
which she dearly loves; and serving on national panels and committees, including for the
FDA, CDC, American Cancer Society, NICHD, ACOG, NASPAG, and the Medical Advisory Board of
Planned Parenthood. Her publications include the first study in the ob/gyn literature on
physical abuse, the first draft of the ACOG Committee Opinion "Using the Menstrual
Cycle as a Vital Sign", a review on normal adolescent menstruation, and an
editorial in the Green Journal titled: Contraception for Women with Intellectual and Developmental
Disabilities: Reproductive Justice. Years ago, she wrote a monthly column for Parents Magazine on
Pregnancy and Birth for 9 years. She has founded two fellowship programs in Pediatric and
Adolescent Gynecology.
She is the proud mother of 3 adult kids (a public high school teacher, a Buddhist monk, and a
senior engineering manager at the Wikimedia Foundation) and adores spending time with her 9
yo granddaughter. She sings in two choral groups, enjoys
knitting (especially during meetings), weaving on a floor loom that belonged to her
grandmother, reading novels, walking and hiking in Northern California and elsewhere around
the globe, and is looking forward to full retirement beginning in May2024.
